Abstract

ARGUEDAS-GARCIA, Cristina  and  MONGE-PEREZ, José Eladio. Effect of planting density on yield and quality of fruits of two genotypes of eggplants (Solanum melongena L.) grown under greenhouse conditions in Costa Rica. Tecnología en Marcha [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.4, pp.66-79. ISSN 0379-3982.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18845/tm.v30i4.3412.

The effect of two planting densities (0,65 and 1,30 plants/m2) on the yield and quality of two eggplant genotypes (JMX-1099 and JMX-292) grown under greenhouse conditions in Alajuela, Costa Rica, was evaluated. The lower density treatment (0,65 plants/m2) yielded a higher total quantity of fruits per plant (22,75) but a lower production per area (14,77 fruits/m2) compared to the higher-density treatment (17,92 fruits/plant and 23,27 fruits/m2). The JMX-1099 genotype yielded fruits with a higher mean weight (299,32 g) than JMX-292 (249,47 g). The lower planting density (0,65 plants/m2) produced a higher total yield per plant (6,18 kg) but a lower yield per area (4,01 kg/m2) than the higher-density treatment (4,94 kg/plant and 6,42 kg/m2). The JMX-1099 genotype produced a higher marketable yield (15,04 fruits/m2) than JMX-292 (11,28 fruits/m2), and the higher-density treatment produced again a higher marketable yield (16,09 fruits/m2) than the lower-density treatment (10,23 fruits/m2). The treatment with the highest marketable yield was genotype JMX-1099 at a planting density of 1,30 plants/m2 (18,90 fruits/m2 and 6,21 kg/m2).
