Some fungal genus have been used in controlling disease-causing agents in plants, so their activity represents an alternative to reduce and even replace some synthetic chemicals. There are many studies about antagonistic Fungi, such as Trichoderma spp., which concurs with other Fungi that have high potential as biocontrol agents, like the genus Gliocladium. In this study, it is intended to establish the antagonistic ability of this one against the pathogen causing white rot in onions Sclerotium cepivorum. It was possible to isolate Gliocladium sp. from a soil sample, which was subcultured until obtain an axenic culture and then, dual cultures were performed on plates with the fungus and the pathogen. The average IPRG obtained at 8 days of exposure (53.66%) showed no significant difference (p= 0,19) to the one obtained at 15 days (54.20%). It was presumed that the control mechanism presented by the strain of Gliocladium sp. used, responds to the production of enzymes, metabolites and possibly a mixture of volatile organic compounds capable of inhibit the growth and development of Sclerotium even if their hyphae don’t come into contact.
