Resumen

ROJAS-BARRANTES, Mainor; RAMIREZ-VALERIO, Daniel  y  CONSTANTINO-CHUAIRE, Luis Miguel. Outbreak of Oligonychus yothersi in coffee plantations of Costa Rica by ash of the Poás Volcano during the year 2017. Agron. Costarricense [online]. 2020, vol.44, n.1, pp.113-122. ISSN 0377-9424.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15517/rac.v44i1.40017.

The red spider mite (Oligonychus yothersi) has been classified as a minor pest in coffee plantations in Costa Rica, affecting only slightly in the dry season at the edges of the crop. The only strong attack of O. yothersi was reported between 1963 and 1965 in the Central Valley, related to the fall of ash from the Irazú volcano. During the year 2017, the Poás volcano released significant amounts of ash that were carried by the wind in a southwest direction and was related to a strong attack of the red spider mite between November 2017 and March 2018, in an area of 4155 hectares located over 1200 m above sea level between Poás and Naranjo. The population decreased by the effect of natural biological control related to abundant population of 5 species of predators. The chemical control with acaricides was evaluated with good results when applying products based on propargite and sulfur.

Palabras clave : Coffea arabica; red spider mite; Oligonychus yothersi; volcanic ash; biological control.
