SOLANO S, Luis E. Estudio sobre agentes etiológicos de vaginitis en la mujer grávida costarricense. Rev. biol. trop [online]. 2002, vol.50, n.2, pp.699-712. ISSN 0034-7744.

Samples from 300 pregnant women were obtained to determin the importance of non gonorreic vaginal infection and the following routine tests were performed on each one: the presence of Tríchomonas vaginali; was noted by examinationof the fresh material; the determination of the flora was done plating on "blood agar base", members of the genus Candida were cultured and isolated, with their identification using auxanogram and zimogram methods: the pH was done by means of fue Bogen's indicator; the glycogen content determined with lugol solution on the fresh material; and a microscopic examination of the direct smear of the sample was performed with Gram stain. Patients were divided into several groups: 1) normal; 2) patients showing a minor grade of vaginitis; 3) other infections together with vaginitis incuding among these T.vaginalis, C. albicans and Escherichia coli; 4} One lase group "with those cases of vaginitis of unknown origin and also those of non infectious nature such as some due to traumatic reasonsand probably some due to functional disturbances. A total 89 patients (29.66 %) with Trichomonas vaginalis were found; 16 of which were in combination with Candida albicans and 4 had no relation to vaginitis or to any abnormality, probably due to the fact of being in the initial stage of the infection. Forthy patients (13.3%) showed Candida albicans, 16 of which, as it has been mentioned. were in combination with T. vaginalis. One patients showed vaginitis caused by Escherichia coli. . .. Candida krusei was found in 2 % of the patients but none showed infection by Candida stellatoidea. The bacterial flora was determined as M. epidermidis, M. aurantiacus, M. flavus, M. candidus, Micrococcus sp., Gaffkya tetragena, Sarcina lutea, Streptococcus sp., Mima polymorpha, Herella vaginicola, Colloides anoxydana, lactobacilos of Döderlein and difteroides. The genus Micrococcus and the tribe Mimeæ furnished the greater numbet of isolations, where the latter was found in normal vaginae as well as in vaginitis, and someof the micrococci in normal vaginae at pH 4. It is possible that M. aurantiacus, and some spedes of the tribe Mimeæ have pathological significance in some cases
