Abstract

VINDAS-GUERRERO, Sylvia  and  ALFARO-CAMPOS, Grethel Carolina. Infection with Zika virus with neurological manifestation. Acta méd. costarric [online]. 2018, vol.60, n.3, pp.136-138. ISSN 0001-6002.

Zika virus is a flavivirus transmitted by Aedes spp. mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti. It´s frequently asymptomatic and the diagnosis of this virus is based on the confirmation of its presence in serological studies. Zika infection has been associated in pregnant women with development of microcephaly in the fetus and in adults with neurological disorders, mainly Guillain Barre Syndrome. At the moment there is no specific treatment or vaccine. We report the case of a young woman 14 years old, with clinical manifestations compatible with a flavivirus and acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy confirmed by serology and electrophysiological findings.

Keywords : Zika Virus; Guillain Barre Syndrome; Aedes; Flavivirus; Microcephaly.
