Abstract

HASBUM-FERNANDEZ, Benhard; ROJAS-SOLANO, José; GUTIERREZ-JAIKEL, Luis  and  LEON-BRATTI, María Paz. Acidosis láctica secundaria a terapia antirretroviral en pacientes con VIH/sida. Acta méd. costarric [online]. 2006, vol.48, n.2, pp.88-90. ISSN 0001-6002.

Lactic acidosis is a rare complication of antiretroviral treatment for HIV. Its occurrence has been related to the use of transcriptase reverse nucleoside analogues, especially estavudine and didanosine. We present here 2 cases of HIV patients who suffered lactic acidosis and were treated at the Internal Medicine Department of the Hospital Mexico, San Jose, Costa Rica. Both cases had a fatal evolution, despite that both received all the therapeutic measures recommended in the literature.

Keywords : lactic acidosis; antiretroviral therapy; lactate; L - carnitine.
