SOLANO-MORA, Luis; MONCADA-JIMENEZ, José; ARAYA-VARGAS, Gerardo  e  JIMENEZ-TORRES, Jairo. Factorial validity of the SF-36 Health Survey in Costa Rican former university employees. Rev. costarric. salud pública [online]. 2015, vol.24, n.2, pp.143-152. ISSN 1409-1429.

The purpose of the study was to obtain the reliability and validity of the SF-36 Health Survey in a group of Costa Rican university retirees. Participants were 79 (39 females and 40 males) former university employees between the ages of 52 and 75 years, who completed the SF-36 questionnaire. Reliability results showed a high Cronbach's α for three of the subscales of the dimension of Physical Health (Physical Functioning [PF] = 0.75, Role-Physical [RP] = 0.87, Bodily Pain [BP] = 0.81) and only moderate in one (General-Health [GH] = 0.61). High Cronbach's α were obtained in two of the Mental Health dimensions' subscales (Mental Health [MH] = 0.79, Role-Emotional [RE] = 0.94), and one low (Social Functioning [SF] = 0.44) and one negative (Vitality [VT] = -0.43) coefficient. Factorial structure validity showed that the instrument does not maintain its original structure, indicating a need for validating the SF-36 instrument before being used to measure retirees in Costa Rica.
