Steamboat Itineraries: Don Juanito Mora on the Road to his Execution I

Resumen:Derrocado en agosto de 1859, tras casi 10 años de ejercer la presidencia de Costa Rica, Juan Rafael Mora fue deportado a El Salvador; retornó en setiembre de 1860, pero pronto fue fusilado. Para entender mejor lo acontecido con sus actividades personales y políticas durante ese intervalo, en procura de retomar el poder, se analiza la información disponible en la prensa de entonces acerca de sus viajes en barco por la costa centroamericana.

Abstract:Victim of a coup in August in 1859, after almost ten years of being the President of Costa Rica, Juan Rafael Mora was deported to El Salvador; he returned in September 1860, but was soon executed by firearm. In order to understand what happened in relation to his personal and political activities during that period of time, when he intended to regain power, the available information from the press at that time regarding his steamboat voyages along the Central American coastline is analyzed.

Laberintos de orgullo (Labyrinths of Pride), by Rosa María Britton: Identity, Memory and Writing in the New Historical Novel of Central America

Resumen:Como una muestra de las propuestas estéticas, literarias e identitarias que ofre ce la "nueva novela histórica" de Centroamérica, se pretende hacer una lectura de la novela Laberintos de orgullo, de la escritora panameña Rosa María Britton. Se quiere mostrar los rasgos propios de la nueva novela histórica centroameri cana, tanto como las singularidades de la escritura de la región, en relación con la construcción de las identidades, en un contexto reconocido como poblado de diversidades. Cómo piensan y plasman los escritores centroamericanos sus autoimágenes en la "nueva novela histórica", cómo han ideado su historia, sus culturas y sus signos, de qué forman plantean la relación entre la historia y la ficción, es el problema que busca abordar el presente estudio.

Abstract:As a simple of the aesthetic, literary and identity proposals offered by the "new historical novel" of Central America, the purpose of this paper is to give a par ticular reading to the novel Laberintos de orgullo, (Labyrinths of Pride) by the Panamanian writer Rosa María Britton. The objective is to show the particular features of the new Central American historical novel, as well as the singularities of the region's writing in connection to the construction of identities in a context known to be diverse. How the writers think and put into writing their self-images in the "new historical novel", how they have pictured their history, cultures and symbols, in which ways they explicit the relation between history and fiction is the main issue this study aims to approach.

Media Narration and Public Power: Towards Communication as a Human Right

Resumen:Este artículo aborda de forma sintética el nexo entre el ejercicio de la ciudada nía y las prácticas comunicativas, desde tres perspectivas complementarias y diferenciadas: la apropiación de la comunicación para la producción, la configu ración del mundo social mediante la función narrativa y, por último, el derecho a la comunicación. Dichos enfoques desembocan en el llamado derecho a la comunicación, de nuevo cuño y orientado a discernir y resistir la superficial y facilista lógica del entretenimiento, articulando teórica y prácticamente el ejercicio de la ciudadanía con los procesos sociales de comunicación.

Abstract:This paper synthetically approaches the link between the exercise of citizens' rights and communicative practices from three complementary, different perspectives: the appropriation of communication for production, the configuration of a social world through narrative functions, and last but not least, the right to communication. Such approaches derive in a call to demand the right to the latest forms communication, oriented towards the discern and resistance of the superfluous and simplistic logic of entertainment, articulating theoretically and practically the exercise of the rights of citizens with social communication processes.

Resumen:Este artículo hace una lectura del poemario Circomística de Angélica Murillo y analiza algunos puntos de la obra para entender cómo la estructura del texto contribuye a organizar el sentido. Se establece una metáfora entre las cuatro partes del libro y los cuatro puntos cardinales.

Abstract: This paper is intended to give a particular reading to the poem book Circomística by Angélica Murillo and analyzes some features of her work in order to unders-tand how the structure of the text contributes to organizing meaning. A metaphor is developed between the four parts of the book and the four cardinal points.
