The Modern Language Association (MLA) Handbook: The Ninth Edition (2021) revisited in the Spanish-Speaker Context

Resumen El trabajo aborda los distintos criterios de documentación y citación bibliográfica de la novena edición (2021) del Manual de estilo de la Modern Language Association (MLA), en el cual, además de considerar las citas dentro de un documento y la sección titulada “Obras citadas”, también explora distintas pautas en relación con el lenguaje inclusivo, las fuentes bibliográficas, las notas al final del documento, el correcto uso de la ortografía y la evitación del plagio. Este ensayo se propone como una guía útil para que profesionales en bibliotecología, editores, profesores, estudiantes e investigadores en las áreas de las letras, las artes y las humanidades puedan escribir de forma clara y consistente, tanto dentro de un manuscrito como en la mencionada sección de obras citadas.

Abstract This paper addresses the different criteria for documentation and bibliographic citation of the ninth edition (2021) of the Manual of Style of the Modern Language Association (MLA), where, in addition to considering citations within a document and the section entitled "Works Cited", it also explores different guidelines in relation to inclusive language, bibliographical sources, endnotes, the correct use of orthography and the avoidance of plagiarism. In short, this essay is proposed as a useful guide for professionals in library science, editors, professors, students, and researchers in the fields of literature, arts, and humanities to write clearly and consistently, both within a manuscript and in the aforementioned works cited section.

Analysis and design of an information system for administrative, teaching and curricular management for the School of Library Science and Documentation and Information (SIGAB)

Resumen Se presenta el análisis de la información que se recopiló a partir del diagnóstico que se realizó sobre la gestión administrativa, docente y curricular, coordinada desde la actividad académica de Aseguramiento de la calidad de la carrera impartida por la Escuela de Bibliotecología, Documentación e Información de la Universidad Nacional. Los resultados permitieron, posteriormente, analizar, diseñar e implementar un sistema de información que se utiliza en la EBDI como apoyo para la sistematización, el procesamiento y la integración de datos que ayudan a la planificación y las acciones de mejora continua de la carrera.

Abstract The analysis of the information that was managed to collect from the diagnosis that was made on the administrative, teaching and curricular management that was carried out from the academic activity of Assurance of the quality of the career taught by the School of Library Science, Documentation and Information from the National University; whose results allowed, later, to do the analysis, design and implementation of an information system that is used in the EBDI as support for the systematization, processing and integration of data that help the planning and actions of continuous improvement of the career.

Strategy Proposal for the linking and follow-up of graduates of the curricula of the School of Library Science, Documentation and Information of the National University of Costa Rica (2022-2026)

Resumen Para la presente investigación, se recopilaron y organizaron fuentes de información que trataron el tema de la vinculación y seguimiento de las personas graduadas de los diferentes programas de estudio de la carrera de la Escuela de Bibliotecología, Documentación e Información (EBDI) de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica. Se analizaron los contenidos que se seleccionaron de las fuentes consultadas y se determinó la necesidad actual de crear una estrategia que orientara y coordinara todas las nuevas iniciativas para fortalecer el vínculo y facilitar el seguimiento de estos profesionales con la EBDI, tomando en cuenta los temas de interés identificados para su actualización y formación continua. El objetivo de la propuesta es fortalecer la vinculación, seguimiento y la comunicación entre ambas partes consideradas mediante una estrategia para el período 2022-2026, lo que facilitaría el conocimiento actualizado de las condiciones del mercado laboral, la gestión de alianzas y los intereses de actualización y educación permanente, tomando en cuenta la experiencia y los aprendizajes logrados de las personas graduadas. Este ejercicio académico se llevó a cabo con un enfoque mixto en el que se emplearon diferentes técnicas y fuentes de información cualitativa y cuantitativa, lo cual facilitó obtener resultados tales como una descripción del contexto e identificación de las necesidades de actualización de las personas graduadas, la identificación del contexto y necesidades tanto de las personas graduadas como de la EBDI de mantener una vinculación y comunicación constante entre sí, y una propuesta de estrategia para la vinculación y seguimiento de estos profesionales con la EBDI.

Abstract For the present investigation, a compilation and organization of information sources was carried out that dealt with the issue of linking and monitoring the graduates of the different study programs of the career of the School of Library Science, Documentation and Information (EBDI) of the National University of Costa Rica. The selected contents of the sources consulted were analyzed, identifying the current need to create a strategy that would guide and coordinate all the new initiatives to strengthen the link and facilitate the follow-up of these professionals with the EBDI, taking into account the topics of interest identified for updating, and continuous training. This proposal has the objective of strengthening the link, monitoring and communication between both parties considered through a strategy for the period 2022-2026 that would facilitate updated knowledge of labor market conditions, the management of alliances and the interests of updating and education. permanent considering the experience and learning achieved by graduates. This academic exercise was carried out with a mixed approach in which different techniques and sources of qualitative and quantitative information were used, facilitating the obtaining of results such as: a description of the context and identification of the updating needs of the people graduates, the identification of the context and needs of both the graduates and the EBDI in maintaining constant links and communication with each other and a strategy proposal for linking and monitoring these professionals with the EBDI.

Digital biomes in the Discord environment

Resumen Para fines del presente texto, los biomas digitales se conceptualizan como una diversidad de recursos y comunidades a partir de las necesidades de información en el contexto digital en línea. El trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo describir las características de los biomas digitales desde el entorno de The English Hub y English; ambos servidores creados por entusiastas, organizaciones e iniciativas en Discord (un servicio de comunicación en tiempo real), con la finalidad de conocer cuáles son los recursos de información recolectados y utilizados por las comunidades en línea. Se tiene como marco teórico la teoría de los sistemas para analizar las dinámicas de los entornos digitales. La metodología de investigación tiene un carácter digital con un enfoque cualitativo centrado en la obtención de los datos. De acuerdo con los resultados en The English Hub y English, servidores dedicados a la práctica y aprendizaje del idioma inglés, se presentan secciones en las que es posible encontrar y compartir recursos de información que pretenden dar alguna respuesta a las necesidades de información de los usuarios que acceden a los sitios temáticos, conocidos como servidores en Discord.

Abstract For the purposes of this text, digital biomes are conceptualized as a diversity of resources and communities based on information needs in the online digital context. The research work aims to describe the characteristics of digital biomes from the environment of The English Hub and English; both servers created by enthusiasts, organizations and initiatives on Discord (a real-time communication service), with the purpose of knowing what information resources are collected and used by online communities. Taking systems theory as a theoretical framework to analyze the dynamics of digital environments. The research methodology has a digital nature with a qualitative approach focused on obtaining data. According to the results in The English Hub and English servers dedicated to the practice and learning of the English language, sections are presented where it is possible to find and share information resources that aim to provide some response to the information needs of users who access thematic sites, known in Discord as servers.

Democratizing information. An analysis of the motivations that drive academics to publish

Resumen Las motivaciones son el entramado que impulsa las acciones de las personas y, según lo han señalado diversas investigaciones, en ellas descansa el éxito de muchas de las labores que influyen al momento de actuar y elegir aquello que se desea alcanzar. El presente escrito indaga en las motivaciones que tienen los académicos activos de la Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica) para publicar sus hallazgos de investigación financiados con fondos públicos, lo cual se efectúa desde un enfoque metodológico mixto, una investigación descriptiva y exploratoria, y parte de cuestionarios, entrevistas y análisis de contenido como técnicas de recolección de datos. Al finalizar la investigación, se concluyó que las motivaciones de los académicos son tanto positivas como negativas, se determinó que existen criterios atractivos académicamente para estos investigadores, pero, al mismo tiempo, están presentes criterios que pueden estar vinculados a concepciones inherentemente desalentadoras. Investigar las motivaciones desde la bibliotecología posibilita identificar cómo estas tendencias influyen en la democratización de la información. Además de comprender cómo los investigadores se sienten motivados por el disfrute y la curiosidad intelectual dependiendo de la revista en que publiquen; esto ayuda a distinguir entre las motivaciones intrínsecas, fundamentales para el compromiso y la calidad del trabajo, y las extrínsecas, como recompensas o reconocimiento externo.

Abstract Motivations are the framework that drives people’s actions, and according to several research studies, they are the basis for the success of many of the tasks that influence the moment of acting and choosing what one wishes to achieve. This paper investigates the motivations of active academics at the National University (Costa Rica) to publish their research findings financed with public funds. Based on, a mixed methodological approach, and a descriptive and exploratory research, and uses questionnaires, interviews, and content analysis as data collection techniques. At the end of the research, it was concluded that the motivations of academics are both positive and negative, it was determined that there are academically attractive criteria for these researchers, but at the same time, there are criteria that may be linked to inherently discouraging conceptions. Investigating motivations from the perspective of librarianship makes it possible to identify how these trends can influence the democratization of information. In addition to understanding how researchers are motivated by enjoyment and intellectual curiosity depending on the journal in which they publish, this helps to distinguish between intrinsic motivations, fundamental to the commitment and quality of the work, and extrinsic motivations, such as rewards or external recognition.

Implementation of reading promotion and dissemination strategies from the Miriam Álvarez Brenes Children's Library (BIMAB) during the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2021

Resumen La promoción y difusión de la lectura desde el espacio de la biblioteca infantil es una labor constante que implica la ejecución de una serie de estrategias y dinámicas para fortalecer y fomentar en la niñez diferentes habilidades que le permitan un mejor nivel de desarrollo integral. En este artículo, se presenta una metodología puesta en práctica por la Biblioteca Infantil Miriam Álvarez Brenes (BIMAB) durante la pandemia COVID-19, en el año 2021, en el desarrollo de actividades formativas. Es preciso señalar que esta metodología se puso en práctica mediante la ejecución de seis actividades formativas con niños y docentes de preescolar. Una opción para evaluar la planificación es implementar una herramienta de recolección de datos que permita su mejora continua.

Abstract The promotion and dissemination of reading from the space of the children’s library is a constant task that involves the implementation of a series strategies and dynamics, to strengthen and encourage different skills in the child that allow a better level of integral development. This article presents a methodology implemented by BIMAB, during the 2021 pandemic, for the development of educational activities. It should be noted that this methodology was implemented through the development of six formative activities with preschool children and teachers. One option to evaluate the planning is the implementation of a data collection tool that allows its continuous improvement.
